Centre for Advanced Materials

CAM, the Centre for Advanced Materials was established in 2011 as a "Central Research Institution" ("Zentrale Wissenschaftliche Einrichtung") of the University of Heidelberg [1].  CAM is conceived as an interdisciplinary Institute which will combine research in different fields like physics, chemistry, physical chemistry, and applied mathematics in order to provide a better understanding of material properties and create new materials. Research will initially be focused on materials for organic electronics, new fields might be taken up with the course of time. The center is dedicated to the more fundamental aspects of the field, like the correlations between structure, process technology, morphology and electronic properties.

"CAM" stands as well for a new research building which has been granted by the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg and the Federal Republic and which is currently being finished and will be ceremonially handed over to the university on May 24, 2017. It is located on the University Campus "Neuenheimer Feld". The building will house the different scientific branches of the materials research program, but will at the same time provide a central technology platform including latest standards in electron microscopy, laser spectroscopy, electron lithography and device technology, including a clean room for materials preparation and device fabrication.

CAM has to be seen as part of a wider effort to establish organic electronics in particular and modern materials science in general in the 'Metropol Region Rhein-Neckar'. Major industrial players in the region have recently founded the InnovationLab GmbH (iL), a laboratory run by industrial and academic partners as part of a common effort to strengthen technology transfer from science to industry. While iL essentially is focused on more technical aspects like prototyping, effiecient and reliable fabrication and device performance, CAM will cover the fundamental aspects, based on the high level natural science competence of the University of Heidelberg. In this way a bridge is being established in Heidelberg covering the whole development chain from basic research to industrial production in materials science.

It has to be underlined that in this sense CAM has to be considered as part of a University strategy stressing application aspects of science within the general concept of Heidelberg as a "comprehensive University".
